Explore Venice’s fascinating history on a private guided walking tour from the Jewish Ghetto to St. Mark’s Square. Discover the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge and the city’s historic commercial, political and religious heart.
Begin your walking tour in the historic Venetian Jewish Ghetto, established in 1516 as the world’s first government-designated Jewish ghetto. The word “ghetto” itself originated here. Over time, the district became home to diverse Jewish communities, including Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Levantine traditions.
Walk through the Ghetto Nuovo and Ghetto Vecchio and discover a distinctive urban landscape shaped by history and necessity.
The unusually tall, narrow buildings reflect the overcrowding caused by restrictions on the area in which the Jewish population was permitted to live. Several historic synagogues were discreetly established on the upper floors of these buildings. Notable examples include the Spanish, Levantine and German synagogues.
In the main square, see memorials commemorating the Venetian Jews who were deported during World War II. Their sculptures and plaques bear witness to both the tragedy and resilience of Venice’s Jewish community.
Leave the Ghetto and continue through the Cannaregio and San Polo districts, weaving through lesser-known alleyways or following Strada Nuova, depending on the route. The urban scenery gradually changes as Venice’s historic commercial heart begins to unfold.
Reach the Grand Canal, Venice’s principal waterway, which served for centuries as an important route for trade, transport and ceremony. Continue to the Rialto Bridge, the oldest and most iconic crossing of the Grand Canal. Originally built as a wooden drawbridge, it was replaced by the present stone bridge in the late 16th century.
The surrounding area was once Venice’s financial and commercial centre. Nearby, the Rialto Market played an essential role in the trade of spices, silk and goods arriving from across the Mediterranean and beyond. Today, shops continue to line the bridge, preserving the lively commercial character of historic Rialto.
Continue through the winding streets of the San Marco district. The atmosphere changes as the route moves from Venice’s commercial centre towards its ceremonial and political heart.
The tour culminates in Piazza San Marco, one of the world’s most celebrated public spaces. The square is surrounded by architectural treasures representing the religious, political and symbolic power of the Venetian Republic.
St. Mark’s Basilica dominates the square with its distinctive Italo-Byzantine architecture. Its domes and golden mosaics reflect the historic meeting of Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
Beside the basilica stands the Doge’s Palace, or Palazzo Ducale, formerly the residence of the Doge and the seat of the Venetian government.
The Campanile, St. Mark’s imposing bell tower, rises approximately 98 metres above the square. Originally used as a watchtower and lighthouse, it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Venetian skyline.
Nearby, the Renaissance Clock Tower, or Torre dell’Orologio, displays the time through its remarkable historic mechanism.
The tour concludes with a panoramic view of St. Mark’s Square, offering a final opportunity to reflect on the history, grandeur and enduring beauty of Venice.
This private Venice walking tour captures the contrasts and complexity of La Serenissima—from the heritage of the Jewish Ghetto and the commercial energy of Rialto to the magnificent monuments of St. Mark’s Square.
